For the first time ever in 2006, the U.S. Mint began striking a 24-karat gold coin – the Gold Buffalo. This superior investment grade coin was inspired from the design of one of America’s most well known and beloved coins, the Buffalo Nickel from famed artist and coin designer James Earle Fraser.
The 2006 Gold Buffalo coin was minted in both an uncirculated and proof edition. Both versions of this coin went on sale in June of 2006, and sold at the spot price of gold with an additional premium above spot.
The price of gold was $603.46 per ounce in 2006, recording a low of $524.75 per ounce, and a high of $725.00 per ounce.
